Owl Sisters
From time immemorial, the two pillars that stand against the skyline near Malaga, WA. have been known as the Owl Sisters, špǝ ɫ a ʔ . The tribal tale of the špǝ ɫ a ʔ sisters goes as:
Two wicked women of the špǝ ɫ a ʔ (owl) race who lived here and did not want to share their home with newcomers. They were giant beings in the habit of killing those who passed by, frightening all. They would grab young ones and stick them into their baskets so they could be roasted.
The humans who occupied the land, begged the great spirit to destroy them. The Great Spirit granted their prayer, and sent Sparrow Hawk to fly down upon them like an arrow. He struck them both in the head and body, attacking again and again until they were killed.
As a lesson against their wickedness, šǝmyáw (coyote) then turned their carcasses into stone.
A hole in the top of one of the columns can be seen today as proof of the consequences.
